Joppa lies at the mouth of the Merrimack River, shaped by tides and time. Settled in the 1600s, it took its name from the ancient port of Joppa, reflecting its life at the edge of sea and river. Long used for fishing, clamming, and marsh work, the nearby flats later became valued for their wildlife. Today, Joppa Flats preserve this landscape where human history and tidal rhythms meet.
